References on Surtsey

There has always been great interest in Surtsey, and numerous articles have been written about it. In the field of geological sciences, a total of 288 papers and books on the Surtsey eruption and Surtsey in the period 1963-1990 have been written in 11 different languages. The number of articles on the biology of the island is most likely similar.

The following is a list of some of the principal writings on Surtsey in various fields of the natural sciences. One section is dedicated to the publications of the Surtsey Research Society and includes a summary of the contents of each of their editions. Surtsey-related videos that are for sale can be found under the heading entitled “films.”

The Surtsey Nature Reserve has been inscribed to the World Heritage List of UNESCO. The Icelandic Institute of Natural History has compiled a nomination document with the assistance and advice of many people and institutions. The complete document is available here (pdf - 10,5 Mb)

A bibliography of close to 500 scientific publications relevant to Surtsey (1963–2006) was also compiled by the Icelandic Institute of Natural History for the same occation. The bibliography can be downloaded here.
